South African National Standards

The following SANS  standards must be incorporated in all rational designs for timber roof structures.

  • SANS   10163 Structural use of timber  
    • 10160 The general procedures and loadings to be adopted in the design of buildings
  • SANS * 10400 The application of the National Building Regulations *
    • 10243 The manufacture and erection of timber trusses
    • 10005 The preservative treatment of timber

The following standard specifications need to be considered in the design of a timber roof structure

  • SPEC   1783 Sawn softwood timber
    • 1707 Eucalyptus brandering and battens
    • 1288 Preservative-treated timber
    • 1460 Laminated timber (glulam)
